In order to obtain both DOT numbers and MC numbers, all new Motor Carriers must submit their application to FMCSA. You must have the following before authority is given after the initial application is submitted:
You have to file a BOC-3 agent document (We’re taking care of this). In any proceedings brought against a motor carrier, broker or freight forwarder, an agent representative in each state is involved, to which court documentation can be provided.
Proof of liability insurance must be filed by your insurance company.
Interstate traffic consists of carriers and vehicles that travel across national lines. These are DOT-regulated and FMCSA-covered Interstate trucks.
Intrastate traffic consists of motors, such as garbage trucks and public transport buses operated within a single state. They are subject to state regulations rather than the DOT.
An exempt for-hire motor carrier is a carrier that hauls exempt property owned by others as a shared or contract carrier for reimbursement. Commodities may include but are not limited to unprocessed or unmanufactured goods, fruits, and vegetables. While subject to the same safety regulations, exempt interstate carriers are not subject to the same insurance filing requirements as common carriers and contract carriers.

An MC number is a motor carrier number. It is a license issued by the DOT and administered by the FMCSA to for-hire carriers. You need it and it will become yours through the carrier authority process.
The BOC-3 form appoints a process agent in each state to recognize and forward legal documents served on the motor carrier by a person or legal entity from outside the carrier’s base state.
